Tips For Decorating On A Budget

decorating home decor
Redecorate your space

Looking to update your home without it costing you an enormous amount of money.  You don’t have to have a huge budget to get upgrades done to your house, condo or apartment.

Budget friendly updates in home decor can be as simple as changing an area rug, or the colours of the pillows.  Let’s get started with a few tips I’ve put together to help bring out the creative you.

Decorating Ideas You Can Afford

Taking the first step in deciding where to begin with home improvements and upgrades is never easy.  I recommend if you are on a budget to tackle one room or project at a time.  Each room comes with it’s own unique expense.  For example a total  kitchen upgrade will cost you more than simply painting a room.  So the first decision you need to make aside from how much you are going to spend is decide on which room you want to upgrade the most and if it fits the budget you start planning.

Tips on Saving Money for Home Decorating

To help get you started with saving money for home decorating I’ve put together these tips.  They will be your guide to getting the new look for your space while saving you money.

Tip 1:  Start with Cleaning & Decluttering –  Yes we’ve all got boxes and closets that are full to the brim of things we don’t use or wear any longer.  Why not consider decluttering.  Decluttering a room can be stressing to get started but once it is done you’ll have a feeling of having more space.

Start with getting rid of clothing you haven’t used or worn for at least 2 years. Place them into boxes and consider donating them to one of our local Ottawa Thrift Stores like St. Vincent De Paul .

Depending on which room you are updating, you may even have furniture, appliances, and other household items that either you no longer have use for or your budget allows you to replace them with new modern ones.  Consider donating these as well.

furniture and appliances for home decorating

Tip 2: Painting – If there’s one affordable way to update any room in your house it would have to be painting.  Adding a fresh paint colour to any room brings new life to any home decor.  With huge selections of colours to choose from from any paint manufacturer.  I personally always like the  Benjamin Moore Paints

Painting is an affordable upgrade to the interior of your house

Painting yourself as a DIY project will save you money.  All you need to do is purchase the paint.  If your budget allows you to hire a professional painting company then the extra splurge will be worth it.

If you’ve never painted before and are looking for advice I found some useful How To  tips that may help get you started.

How To Paint the Interior of A House

Proper planning of your time, supplies and materials you will need to tackle your DIY house painting is crucial before getting started. The following are tips, steps in how to and advice of what you will need and how to plan.

Wallpaper is making a come back in home decor.  Wallpapering is yet another budget friendly option to update a room.  If you are installing it make sure to ask the friendly staff at any local Ottawa store on how to or you can find it anywhere on the internet too.  If you are removing the wallpaper  then you should take note of steps to removing it and repairing the drywall before painting in order to have a perfect smooth painted finish.

Tip 3 Add in the Accessories – Now if you are on a very limited budget and cannot go ahead with some of the upgrades mentioned above then something as easy as changing the pillows on your sofa, adding in a new lamp, hanging a new picture, changing an area rug, a new bed comforter are all great ideas on changing up the look to your space.  They are not as expensive as changing the entire flooring, kitchen cabinets, or bathroom vanities.
Even if your budget doesn’t currently allow you to get the painting done then changing up the accessories will allow you to add that punch of new colour and give you a feeling of a fresh new home decor look.

I hope you’ve found these few tips to be useful. Please share if you did.

Ciao for now

Painting And Decorating

hanging lights in brown, fuscia, pink, blue, orange, red and purple

Super Excited to announce my new project ideas for this blog site.  I hope you’ll check back often for updates.  I am going to start including more ideas on home decor with focus on painting and decorating and how to get your house looking like a million bucks on a budget.

Painting & Decorating

Well I’ve always had a passion for decorating the house.  I’ve always loved going through catalogues or online to choose paint colours.  I’ve always loved buying furniture, accessories on a budget  and everything else to beautify the home and making it look like a model home.

I’ll be sharing my thoughts and my own opinions on paint colours and the power of paint colours in house painting,  because I love the way some paint colours bring serenity to any room of the house.  My favorites these days are Gray’s in different hues.  From blue to brown to green paint hues, the Gray’s are so very popular in Ottawa area homes.  I’ll be updating you on  what is new and trending, my likes in furniture and accessories, and more.  Sure we may not have the same tastes but they are  ideas and easy on the budget.

From when we bought our first house and had it painted, changed the ceramic, added dark cherry coloured french doors, and dark hardwood flooring, to picking out the neutral paint colours for painting, and the colour of the couch and picture frames, i’ve always had that passion. I love to decorate the home.

Although I am not an interior designer or a home stager I  do have a passion for home decor.  Many of our house painting clients have asked for my suggestions on what colours to chose, so I send them suggestions.  Some times they go with my ideas, other times they go a shade lighter than what i suggested or sometimes their just more comfortable having the same paint colour again, only a tone or two darker.  It still gives them a refresh and a new coat of paint and just revives the room or house.

Painting a room or entire house in a white paint makes everything appear larger especially if there are many windows that let in the sun and daylight. White Paint is the most neutral you can go.  It’s easy on the eye as well as easy to paint over if a fresh coat is all that is needed.  It’s a simple yet crisp and clean environment that can be highlighted with bold coloured accessories such as dark furniture, accent rugs, throw pillow and wall art.

Dark Paint Colours

Dark Hues and Tones in any Paint Colour will most definitely add a punch of drama to any home decor. Although they are perfect for places like the entrance as seen in the photo above, they are also perfect for an accent wall in any room of your house.  There is a consideration though if you are planning on selling your home, the choice of dark paint colours you choose may not be the ones to attract potential buyers.

  2. Invest in a good quality paint brush and paint roller. The cheaper ones will leave behind hairs or fibers, and won’t apply the paint as well and you’ll most likely run into paint problems.
  3. Buy caulking and applicator to seal any cracks around the windows, trim and baseboards. Caulking before painting is an important step to achieving good results.
  4. Get the best quality paint product your budget allows.  Not all paints are created equal.
  5. Buy a putty knife and filler to patch nail pops, dents, holes or imperfections. If there is more damage to the drywall than just nail pops or small holes then you need to get a trowel and drywall compound to do drywall repairs.  See our tips on how to avoid paint blocking or sticking problems.

To Do List Before Moving In

Moving in to a new house or condo

Are you ready for the big moving day?  You’ve just purchased that new house or condo and the keys have been handed to you and you’re super excited for this new phase in your life.  Here is a quick to do list before moving in.

Change the locks on all exterior doors

keys and locks for house
Make sure you change all exterior door locks to new house or condo

If your a handy kind of person that knows how to change a door lock than absolutely go for it. There are plenty sold in all the big box stores at decent prices.  Now a days there are so many options too. You can get the new modern ones that have keyless entry or go with old school lock and key. If your not a do it yourselfer than you can always hire a locksmith who will replace them for you.  You do not want to keep the old locks from the previous owners as one never knows how many others those keys were shared with.  Better to be safe than sorry.

Paint all the walls and ceilings

Interior Painting by PG PAINT & DESIGN Ottawa House Painters
Painting your house or condo before you move in is the perfect way to start

It’s easier for you the homeowner to have your condo or house painting done before you move in.  It’s a good idea to hire a professional painter in Ottawa  who can take care of all the necessary repairs of holes, cracks, damaged walls or ceilings and other defects.  This way you’ll be able to have a fresh coat of paint and new colours in your new place before moving in. Painting also is a great form of house cleaning.  It’s easier to paint the walls than to wash them all down prior to move in as it is time consuming.

Get the house cleaned

cleaning hardwood floors with mop
A good cleaning before moving in gives you extra time to do the many other things

Usually it’s the norm that the homeowners moving out will leave the house clean and tidy for the new ones to move in.  Sometimes it’ll happen they won’t but nonetheless it’s nice to have another good deep cleaning done before you move in.  If you have the time, and energy you’re going to want to do it yourself, but if you can’t then hire a professional Ottawa house cleaning company like Green Apple Cleaning. Sometimes it’s just worth the extra money while you get other things done.

Make sure you get a professional to test all mechanical equipment is cleaned and serviced

gas furnace burner
Hire a professional to ensure the furnace and air conditioner is in working order

You want to make sure that the furnace and air conditioner in your new home or condo are in proper working condition.  You don’t want to get stuck at -40 degree weather in Ottawa and the furnace won’t come on and same thing with our hot humid summers, you want to be able to flip on the switch and have them both working.  You also don’t want to get caught having to pay for an emergency service call in the middle of winter or summer.  Ensure that they are by hiring a professional furnace and air conditioner specialist.

Make sure all electrical is working properly and efficiently

light bulbs to light up a room
Make sure all electrical is up to code and working properly and efficiently

If it’s a new home you don’t really have to worry about the electrical as it should be all up to code since it’s a new house or condo.  If you’re moving in an older Ottawa home than it’s advisable for you to ensure that all the electrical stuff is working properly, efficiently and safely.  You should hire a professional electrician. We recommend the services of Tri-Wave Electric Ltd in Ottawa to take care of servicing these issues.  Of course if it’s a new home or even an older one that has undergone extensive renovations and the electrical has already been updated than sometimes all you need is to change the light switch plates.  They may be old and mismatched or broken.  It’s an easy and inexpensive fix to just go out and buy all new ones and have every room in your house looking updated with new light switch plates, and plug outlets.

Add or Install New Windows and or Treatments

white window blinds
Window Treatments are great for privacy and updated look to your house

If it’s an older home you’ve purchased perhaps the windows need to be replaced. You can ask a professional window replacement and manufacturing business in Ottawa.   They will take care of everything from taking the precise measurements to installation, they make it a breeze.  This way your home has added protection from drafts and cold as well as not letting any hot humid air in on our hot summer days.

If you don’t need new windows, that’s a bonus and added savings in your pocket.  It would be nice to get new shades or blinds or even curtains.  The ones previous owners left behind may not be to your liking and of course in newly constructed homes or condo units you’ll have to put in window treatments.  It adds your finishing touch to your space, and of course your privacy.

If you found these tips to be helpful please share with your family and friends. As always if you’re looking for a painting contractor give us a call or email.

SCAM Alert!!!

So it’s 7:30pm on this quite Monday January 23rd 2017.  We at PG PAINT & DESIGN had settled for a relaxing evening after a long day’s work just like the rest of the great folks in the City of Ottawa.  Phone Rings…..  She says her name is Rachel and she’s from “Ontario Water & Health Safety Services” (of course she had to repeat it 3 times cause it wasn’t coming through clearly, not because i’m deaf but she mumbled it every time.

a glass of tap water from houses in ottawa
A glass of tap water from our Ottawa Homes. Photo courtesy of Ottawa Sun Newspaper Article of March 2015

So i pretended to listen 🙂

She continued to tell me that our City of Ottawa water is not being filtered. It is at extremely high levels of chlorine and other stuff that i kind of started to tune out because i just had a gut feeling this was a scam. Especially since I had not heard local Ottawa news or read anything in the local Ottawa newspapers lately.  You’ll find that Both the Ottawa Citizen and the Ottawa Sun had put out articles the are listed at the end of this post. I have to admit I just haven’t had the time to read them 🙂

As a fellow Ottawan I felt the need to put this out there and let others know because there is so much scamming out there and we need to all protect ourselves.

So the phone conversation goes something like this:

Pina from PG PAINT & DESIGN on the phone taking a call

Me on the Phone 🙂 🙂 🙂

She says: We have our team out in the K2E 7M8 area tomorrow and wondered what a convenient time would be to have one of the guys stop in and check your water.  He’ll watch you run the water from your kitchen tap and then test it.  Right there and then I thought THIS CAN’T BE REAL!!

So of course I told her there is no convenient time tomorrow because I need to research what she was talking about first.  Since I had not heard anything regarding this from any of the news sources here in Ottawa.  So she tells me to go to the Health Canada website and look up “Drinking Water Chlorination”.  Then she asks me again about what the good time would be for someone to come by tomorrow.  I told her that Absolutley NO TIME was good.  I would google everything first.  So she said OK then do your research and hopefully we can call you back again.

So first i googled “Ontario Water & Health Safety Services” and all that kept coming up was Scam, Door-to-Door Water Testing is a scam.  There is no “Ontario Water & Healthy Safety Services” not that i could google anyway.  So then I went to Google and typed in the Health Canada Website and typed a search for drinking water chlorination just like she told me to. You can read everything at the Health Canada Website articles  There was no warning or anything I could find, if you do I hope you’ll let us know or at least the City of Ottawa and our Mayor Jim Watson.

We sincerely believe our water to be safe here in our city of Ottawa otherwise we would have heard something from our city officials and FOR CERTAIN Health Canada would have put out warning for all of us.

So please take note and don’t get caught opening your door to these scammers

Write this PHONE NUMBER 613-225-1441ONTARIO WATER & HEALTH SAFETY SERVICES” on a piece of paper and put it near your phone to remind you to either not answer the call or remind you to NOT OPEN THE DOOR to anyone claiming they are they to check your water.

If you get any of these unsolicited calls or someone just shows up at your door without the proper City of Ottawa I.D. Badges please report then by calling our Ottawa Police Service at 613-236-1222.

The Ottawa Sun Article can be found by clicking here

The Ottawa Citizen article can be read by clicking here

It’s important we all look out for each other. Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you found it useful please share it with your family and friends so that they too can be protected and aware of these scammers.

Paint Colour Psychology

Ever wonder why many hospitals are painted in a green or blue paint colour?

It’s believed that the colour green offers a feeling of freshness like outdoor nature and the feeling of hope.  When green is used in combination with blue it offers a relaxing atmosphere.  Kind of makes it a little easier when you’re not well and stuck in a hospital room for days.  If nothing else the paint colour can be soothing.

The Meaning of the Colour Green

Paint Colour Psychology

On November 25 2016 we published an article regarding Colour and your Personality which tells us how and why you choose a certain colour over another.  Whether for your wardrobe, buying that new car or for your house painting project, they are a reflection of our personality and outlook on life itself.

Paint Colours to choose for house painting that define your personality
Paint Colours define your space with personality

What is your Colour Personality

Understanding Paint Colour Psychology

How can you use the paint colour choices you make to help you achieve the look and feel you’re after in your home decor scheme.

Next time you drive thru or go into a restaurant notice how there’s a lot of Red and or Yellow colours used.  The Colour Psychology here is that the bold and bright cheery colours tend trick your mind into making an impulsive decision to buy.  They have a certain power to persuade you and give you that determination to buy.

Using the Paint Colour Psychology for your House Painting Project

When considering taking on a house painting project, whether it’s a DIY or you hire a professional painter take a few of the following tips into consideration when choosing paint colour.  Let the personality descriptions behind the colours be somewhat of a guide to help you achieve the look and feel you want for your home.

Paint Colour Psychology
Paint Colour Physcology

Entryway/Foyer – Painting a a Shade of Grey or any other neutral shade in your entrance gives you that calming and relaxing feeling the moment you walk through your front door. Cozy it up with warm accessories such as a front entry table, a table lamp, some silver or deep coloured accessories.  Cream colours also blend nicely.  If you use dark wood in the table or other accessory it will make a bold yet welcoming statement.  Throw a bowl on the table to catch your keys or phone when you walk in.

Kitchen – Many of our clients choose a neutral colour for their kitchen, whether it’s a gray, blue or taupe, because most times the kitchen blends with the family room and if it’s a full open concept home then all the rooms interconnect and it’s hard to pick different colours for each room, although it can be done.  Most often the same colour is used just in a lighter or darker tone to the other room.  Some say the best colour for kitchen is white, which gives the feeling of purity and cleanliness. On the other hand black and red are not highly favoured as they tend to flare up tempers in the kitchen.

Bedroom – The color of your bedroom is a personal thing and also depends on the age of the individual using that room.  Take for example a nursery would be a soothing space in a light green, or silver-blue hue. These colours tend to make it neutral for either a boy or girl.  If the room is for a toddler you can make a dark coloured blue painted wall with either lighter shades on the other three walls or paint the ceiling a cream colour.  These paint colours can grow with the toddler well into the tweenage years.  Same goes for a girl’s room.  Pinks, Purples blend perfectly with grays and they are colours they can keep till their tweens too.  Subdued hues of greens and blues promote rest. Green also creates a peaceful calm and encourages learning.

Dining Room – Blues, Greens, Greys all go perfectly in the dining room as they all promote conversation.  Apparently many restaurants use these colours because they stimulate the palate and appetite.

Bathroom – Paint your bathroom in light shades of greens, blues, pink or white.  These will provide you with the feeling of calmness where you can retreat at the beginning and end of each day.  Black and or Grey make perfect accent colours.  Bathrooms are considered one of the important rooms in your house as it is usually the first one you enter each day and the colours in that room make all the difference in how your day will start

Go to your local Paint store or ask your personal painter in Ottawa  to give you or show you paint colour samples.  Together or independently you can select the perfect paint colour for your home.  Your professional painter will assist you in choosing. You can pick up colour chips at the paint store, bring them home and stick them on the walls for a few days.  Let the morning light shine onto them as well as the evening interior lights, this way you can see the difference between the daytime and nighttime hue of the paint colour. Green is the colour of Hope, Fresh and Clean. Green and blue combinations offer a relaxing atmosphere. Yellow is the colour of Patience and Tolerance, it is said that those who choose this colour have a positive outlook on life in general. Orange is the colour of Creativity, it enhances studying or getting work done in your home office. Red is the colour of Romance. Did you also know it says you have Power, are Impulsive, Ambition and Determination. You can be very Persuasive too. Purple is the Colour that shows off the Charismatic, Sensitive type.  It also shows that you either possess or aim to achieve money and power.  Peach is the colour of those in Love, love to be social and are thought to be very Lucky. Pink is also the colour of affection.  It shows the softer and kind hearted side of you. It’s perfect for a little girls room usually, most often times when used in painting and decorating a girl’s room it’s usually in a hot pink, bubble gum pink or cotton candy pink.  When used in a grown up space the tone and hue of the pink colour is subdued with a hint of grey to bring out the more sophisticated adult look to your space or room.

Gray Colour brings balance to everything. So when considering it as a paint colour for a living room, dining room or family room, think of it as a calming and relaxing colour that is a perfect backdrop to bringing balance with other colours you may add to your colour scheme.
